Counterfeit Product is an important menace all organizations selling retail products face. To verify the product's authenticity and ensure that hazardous products like counterfeit medicines are not sold in the market, we have to find a model to solve this issue. I propose a simple solution with a QR Code and a Smart Phone. Medicines which is sold in boxes of 10 strips and other products like Rice Packets, Branded apparel, Shoes, etc. can be protected from being counterfeited.
Products Common Repository (PCR) managed by Regulator
There should be a Products Common Repository (PCR) that holds information about all the products of companies that want to prevent their products from being counterfeited. They have to register their products in the Products Common Repository regulator with information about their products, along with clear photographs of their outer covers and their products' appearance. All the products should have unambiguous brand names and logos, both registered and displayed in the Products Common Repository (PCR), as well as in their products.
QR Code and link to the Products Common Repository
Every product will have an open QR Code and a hidden 6-digit Alpha-Numeric Code in its scratch card. If you scan the QR code using the Product Common Repository App, it will connect the user to the Particular Page on the PCR that contains all the information about the product, photos, and a 6-digit Alpha-Numeric Code. After scanning the QR Code in the product, scratch the card and compare the 6-digit Alpha-Numeric Code in the product and the Particular Page in the PCR. If both the 6-digit AlphaNumeric codes match, it is a legitimate original product. For every QR Code, there is a separate 6-digit Alpha-Numeric Code, which will be Pre-Fed into the PCR. So when you scan a QR Code, it will show 6-digit Alpha-Numeric Code for the specific Product in your hand. Also, make sure that the Page on the PCR has the product details that match with the product you possess. If it doesn't, it is not a legitimate product. If you scan the QR Code of all Dove Body Washes, all of it lands on the same page of the Dove Body Wash. But each of them displays a different 6-digit Alpha-Numeric Code. Also, Different sizes of Dove Body Wash land on different pages so that the product in hand exactly matches the description and picture on the PCR Page.
Legitimate and Counterfeit Product
When you scan a product's QR Code for the first time in the PCR App, it will take you to the page with details and a 6-digit Alpha-Numeric Code on PCR. But if you scan it again, it will show, "Already scanned, Might be a counterfeit Product". This is to make sure that someone does not hold an already used product and prints the QR Code and 6-digit Alpha-Numeric Code in the already bought and used product on all counterfeit products and sells it. The metadata regarding your scan will be stored in the PCR App on your Smart Phone. So, if you scan a product for the first time and it is legitimate, the PCR App will store your Phone Number and that you are the one who scanned it first. So, the next time you scan the QR Product of the same product, it will show "You already scanned this product". If you have more than one Smart Phone in your home and not sure whether you scanned a product already, Use all the Smart Phones, which is registered with PCR App. At least one will display "You already scanned this product".
Complain about a Counterfeit product
Customers can report a counterfeit product, by simply clicking the option, "I have a counterfeit Product" after the option "Already scanned, might be a Counterfeit Product", comes up and not "You scanned this product". You can report about the shop that sold you the counterfeit products by choosing their address on the PCR App using Apple Maps or Google Maps. Companies can track their retailers (shops) through serial numbers, QR Codes, or any other means they like, to make sure that the product on which the complaint is registered is indeed sold by the same shop.
Ranking of Products
Through the PCR App, you can rank the products you bought by giving them scores. You can give scores only after scanning the QR code, to make sure you indeed bought the product and it is a legitimate one. You can earn points by giving scores. The points can be redeemed to recharge Mobile Numbers, buy Movie Tickets, or jewelry. You don't need to immediately give scores to the products. You can use it and then rank it. But only through the first scanned Mobile Phone PCR App, you can give scores. It doesn't matter how many points you give. All that matters is whether you give your feedback by giving scores or not. PCR App will only display 3 ranks, which are Poor, Average, and Good to the viewers to see.
